Summary

This book is essentially a teaching machine。 The way a teaching machine works is: It asks you a question。 If you give the right answer, it goes on to the next question。 If you give the wrong answer, it tells you why the answer is wrong and tells you to go back and try again。 This is called "programmed learning"。 The real authors were experts and authorities in the field of programmed learning。 Bobby Fischer lent his name to the project。 Stuart Margulies is a chess master and also a recognized authority on programmed learning。 He is a widely published author of more than 40 books, all in the field of programmed learning, especially in learning how to read。 For example, one of his books is "Critical reading for proficiency 1 : introductory level"。 Donn Mosenfelder is not a known or recognized chess player, but he was the owner of the company that developed and designed this book。 He has written more than 25 books, almost all on basic reading, writing and math。

Helped a little but it was really basic

Better learning resources available elsewhere。 Book covered the basics and had a lot of great puzzles based on famous matches, but everything in this book can be found online。

Quan Tran

I found this book decent tbh。 For beginner players like me, it helps to calculate, double-think my moves much more effective

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess is a book mis-titled。 While it does teach the rules of Chess in its opening chapter, anyone with access to the internet can learn what pieces are what and how they move and take the opponent’s pieces。 The rest of the book is devoted to mating combinations and chess puzzles。 They serve as decent brain teases but at no point is a n attempt kade to teach opening sequences or mid game strategies。 The age of the book is shown in how much of what it does can be learnt now f Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess is a book mis-titled。 While it does teach the rules of Chess in its opening chapter, anyone with access to the internet can learn what pieces are what and how they move and take the opponent’s pieces。 The rest of the book is devoted to mating combinations and chess puzzles。 They serve as decent brain teases but at no point is a n attempt kade to teach opening sequences or mid game strategies。 The age of the book is shown in how much of what it does can be learnt now from just playing an online chess app。 In addition, looking into its history there are doubts to how much Fischer contributed to the book’s writing and how much was just taken from known games or put on paper the coauthors。 It makes it seem that this book was just a 60’s ploy to sell books with name notoriety。 Regardless, its a introductory book that could have use for beginners but is not recommended for anyone trying to take their game to the next level。 。。。more

Deep into COVID times seemed like a good time to go beyond the ultra basics of chess and learn a little about how to actually play。 I picked up this book with no illusions of what it was - I knew it wasn't actually written by Fischer, and I knew it was essentially a collection of puzzles that teach specific checkmate patterns。 And knowing that, I was mostly satisfied! I say mostly, because the only way to get this book is in mass market paperback format, and the printing quality is terrible, making some of the diagrams extremely difficult to see。 Eventually, I got my hands on a digital copy, but if anything it was even worse than the print version, being nothing but an obvious scan of the mass market paperback version。An update of this book with higher quality pictures and algebraic notation in both the diagrams and the descriptions would go a long way。 。。。more

A progressive series of puzzles that teaches checkmates up to four moves in advance! Fun, easy to use and no board required。 Makes me think checkmate is possible at any stage

Good starter book, I guess?

Surprisingly, I'm disappointed in this book。 Almost the entire thing is made up of 275 back rank checkmate puzzles of increasing difficulty。 Back rank mating is a very important skill to learn, and I'm sure I'll be better at it now。 The main problem is the puzzles are formatted in a way that's not very conducive to learning。 The book presents a puzzle, tells you to find the correct answer (usually by picking yes/no and drawing the first move in a sequence), and then you turn the page to find out Surprisingly, I'm disappointed in this book。 Almost the entire thing is made up of 275 back rank checkmate puzzles of increasing difficulty。 Back rank mating is a very important skill to learn, and I'm sure I'll be better at it now。 The main problem is the puzzles are formatted in a way that's not very conducive to learning。 The book presents a puzzle, tells you to find the correct answer (usually by picking yes/no and drawing the first move in a sequence), and then you turn the page to find out if you were right or wrong。 So most readers would probably end up with a lot of incorrect answers scribbled onto their pages (I know I would have if I didn't use my eraser)。 You also have to flip the book upside-down halfway through to do the rest of the puzzles, which is a little bizarre but a more economic use of paper I guess。 The principles are sound, of course, but there's nothing you couldn't learn from puzzles on Chess。com or other sites/apps these days。 There's a select few anecdotes covering games that Fischer played, but they're never explored in any depth。 I'm sure the book was indispensable in 1966 and for a few decades after。 But it still makes a lot of top Chess book lists, which doesn't make sense in a world with much better learning tools and resources。 。。。more

Wonderful little book for beginners。 It won't make you a master of chess, but it will help you oversee the board better, visualise, and look for patterns。 I absolutely loved how it's more of a workbook than just theory - trying to figure the puzzles out and drawing moves with my pen helped cement the new knowledge a lot。 Wonderful little book for beginners。 It won't make you a master of chess, but it will help you oversee the board better, visualise, and look for patterns。 I absolutely loved how it's more of a workbook than just theory - trying to figure the puzzles out and drawing moves with my pen helped cement the new knowledge a lot。 。。。more

This is a wonderful, practical guide to chess。 You can simply pick it up any time and work through each exercise。 It really helps the reader get into a rhythm in planning certain attack and defensive strategies。 Highly recommended!

Very good book。 I honestly could not see checkmates before。 I think I'm better at doing so now, though I AM frequently mated, still!I believe the complaint has come up elsewhere, but this is NOT a book on chess, per se。 You'll learn simple-to-more-complex checkmates, but it is not inherently about tactics, though some come into play。 As a mild beginner, it helped me, but I am still just as bad at getting to the positions described in the book as before。 Very good book。 I honestly could not see checkmates before。 I think I'm better at doing so now, though I AM frequently mated, still!I believe the complaint has come up elsewhere, but this is NOT a book on chess, per se。 You'll learn simple-to-more-complex checkmates, but it is not inherently about tactics, though some come into play。 As a mild beginner, it helped me, but I am still just as bad at getting to the positions described in the book as before。 。。。more

This is not really a "Bobby Fischer Teaches" anything book; instead, it is basically a chess puzzle book, with many different problems to solve, it does not really teach chess strategy。 It was quite fun, but it only really dealt with delivering check mates, and did not give much to go off in the middle and beginning of the game。 This is not good for the obvious reason that check mates are typically reserved for those who havent already been check mated。。。All in all it was a helpful book, but unf This is not really a "Bobby Fischer Teaches" anything book; instead, it is basically a chess puzzle book, with many different problems to solve, it does not really teach chess strategy。 It was quite fun, but it only really dealt with delivering check mates, and did not give much to go off in the middle and beginning of the game。 This is not good for the obvious reason that check mates are typically reserved for those who havent already been check mated。。。All in all it was a helpful book, but unfortunately it cant compare with the benefits of technology when it comes to chess strategies and puzzles, as the online systems these days can generate endless puzzles, multiple moves, beginning middle and end game, etc。 Probably not really worth picking up unless you want it for the aesthetics - which I think it is a cool book。 It also has the additional downside of having to draw inside the book, rendering it basically useless if you wanted to give it away for someone else to solve。I love sticking to the classic way things are done, but in my opinion, this is one of those times where technology is clearly better。 Sorry, Bobby。 。。。more

As an interactive way to learn from a grandmaster written in the 1960s, this book is a brilliant way to learn the ways of a brilliant teacher。I was interested in Bobby Fischer once I heard about him and his history as a Chicagoan and champion, but disappointed to learn that his life took a disappointing turn from there。 Nevertheless, the book's utility as a no-nonsense way of learning the game is perfect。 I feel like I look at the game entirely differently than I had before, and I'd played aroun As an interactive way to learn from a grandmaster written in the 1960s, this book is a brilliant way to learn the ways of a brilliant teacher。I was interested in Bobby Fischer once I heard about him and his history as a Chicagoan and champion, but disappointed to learn that his life took a disappointing turn from there。 Nevertheless, the book's utility as a no-nonsense way of learning the game is perfect。 I feel like I look at the game entirely differently than I had before, and I'd played around 600 games before I started it。 Now, I know that chess is not about winning with the highest margin of victory, but tactical mastery of the board to make your opponent's position indefensible。 The importance of the sequence of the moves and long lines of attack on the king to force complex mates is paramount。 Anyone can go from novice to advanced player simply by reading this book。 My only wish is that I read it before damaging my rating with my trial-by-fire approach to competitive chess almost 2 years ago。Lastly, while dominating principles apply, thinking steps in advance is not optional。 A master player must also assume no mistakes from his opponent。 Baiting an opponent into mistakes is a chance you can't take against the best。 The game is about creating a tactical advantage and executing on it to perfection, leaving your opponent without a chance。 Most importantly, tempo, avoiding moving the same piece twice, and a wide assault。 Develop pieces and gain check。 Keep initiative。It's a shame Fischer went down a strange, despicable path late in his life。 I simply don't understand how someone of his intelligence could be an antisemite。 What a shame。 His comments throughout his life are outrageous and reprehensible。His contribution to the game is insane, between chess960 and the timing system。 This book is a must-read for anyone who loves the game。Fischer's material, including his "60 memorable games" and more study of his Game of the Century as a 13 year old, are to be added to my list。 His skill is simply unbelievable。 。。。more

After going through the rules of chess, this book focuses on how to achieve or defend against mostly back rank checkmates。 It’s useful for that purpose and it helped me to see more checkmates than I would usually be aware of。 Good for intermediate players。
